We’re proud to highlight the 36 innovative educators who received over $75,000 in grants through our 2024-2025 Grants for Inspiration & Innovation program! These grants support creative teaching methods that make a lasting impact on students.
One standout example comes from Mrs. Davila’s 4th grade GT class, where students recently engaged in an interactive lesson on Screen Time vs. Active Play—with the help of breakout boxes.
Rather than simply discussing the benefits of active play, Mrs. Davila transformed the lesson into an exciting detective-style challenge. Students worked together to unlock clues tied to the Thanksgiving holiday, all while strengthening key skills such as teamwork, critical thinking, and persistence.
As they cracked each code, students experienced firsthand the energy boost that comes from movement and engagement. This sparked a meaningful reflection on their own daily habits. To solidify their learning, students participated in a poll, casting their votes on Screen Time vs. Active Play. The results? A unanimous vote in favor of Active Play!
By allowing time for debriefing, Mrs. Davila helped her students draw connections between the activity and their personal choices. Seeing them collaborate, communicate, and problem-solve using the breakout boxes was a reminder of the power of hands-on learning.
This lesson is a prime example of how the Education Foundation of Odessa grants empower teachers to go beyond traditional methods, making learning both meaningful and memorable.
Thank you, Mrs. Davila, for inspiring your students to think outside the box—literally!
