The Education Foundation of Odessa’s Inspiration Station, a mobile educational vehicle, is transforming how students across the district access STEAM resources and hands-on learning experiences. The project, which began as a board member’s vision inspired by childhood memories of a mobile library, has evolved into a comprehensive educational platform offering everything from STEM activities and literacy programs to health services.

Dr. Kristin Whittenburg, Director of STEAM Initiatives and Special Projects, notes that the community’s reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. “Watching people’s faces, both children and adults, as they walk into the Inspiration Station for the first time is just like ‘Oh wow, I didn’t think this is what it would be like on the inside,'” she shares. The mobile unit features engaging activities like Van de Graaff generators, robotics, and electrical circuit demonstrations while also providing free books to students and valuable resources to families.

The Inspiration Station has already formed significant partnerships with organizations including Chevron, Basin PBS, the Museum of the Southwest, and Complex Community Federal Credit Union. These collaborations have enabled participation in major community events like the Midland Air Show and Heritage Festival. Recently, Chevron enhanced the station’s offerings with a new telescope donation. “Chevron is deeply honored to support the Inspiration Station with this donation,” said Valerie Acosta, Chevron public and government affairs advisor. “We believe the new telescope will not only enhance the educational experience for students but also ignite a passion for discovery and innovation in the next generation.”

Looking ahead, Dr. Whittenburg envisions the Inspiration Station becoming synonymous with excitement, literacy, and positive connections between the community and school district. She sees the mobile unit as a way to expand educational impact beyond classroom walls. “Every time we go out, I expect to see one of those a-ha moments in a student or even a parent,” she explains. “We’re helping launch students into futures they would not have even known existed without this vehicle.”
